From Amherst to Cashmere
Selected Poems by Emily Dickinison
With Ten Color Etchings by
Margaret Taylor

Margaret Taylor began sketches and watercolors for the poems in the summer of 1983. Color proofs of the etchings were made in 1984 and 1985. The edition was printed by the artist in her Amherst studio in 1986 and 1987.

Each of the images has been printed from four separate plates on Hahnemuhle etching paper. Book design is by Bruce Chandler at Ardeaurum Workshop in Boston, MA. The text was cast in Monotype Van Dijck by Michael and Winifred Bixler, Skaneateles, New York, and printed by Daniel Keleher of Wild Carrot Letterpress, Hadley, MA. The binding was designed by David Bourbeau, with silk covers painted by Daniel Gehnrich, at the Thistle Bindery, Easthampton, MA.

The edition consists of fifty copies, signed and numbered by the artist.

"The complex simplicity of Emily Dickinson's poems provides formidable challenges to anyone who would give iconographic expression to it. Margaret Taylor had the daring, the depth, and the skill for the task.

Her etchings give visual extension to the spiritual probe set in motion by Dickinson's words, and in doing so, renders appropriate honor to them." - Decherd Turner, Director, The Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center, The University of Texas.

A Route of Evanescence

"Margaret Taylor's etchings are compact like Emily Dickinson's quatrains and, like them, intense with our Amherst light - that, as she said, 'almost speaks to you. ". - David Porter, author of "Dickinson: The Modern Idiom"

Like Rain it sounded
"This book fully meets the enormous demands made by the artist / bookmaker on herself: to provide a truly appropriate setting for poems of Emily Dickinson. The result is gorgeous. I especially admire 'A Route of Evanescence'". - Everett Emerson, Professor of English and American Studies, The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
